Pageant on a Budget- Designer Interview Attire

I personally think that the interview competition seals the deal for a contestant. If you really stand out there,  the judges will have you in the top of their minds during on-stage competitions. This is a chance for the judges to not only see if you can speak confidently, but also a chance for them to see your face up close and your body too! Which is why it is important to look fantastic. I think there are several different approaches on what to wear for an interview, so this is just one fabulous suggestion.

Who doesn't love designer clothing? It is made well, fits fantastically, and makes you feel like a million bucks probably because it cost that much. One of my favorite websites is Rent the Runway because it allows you to rent designers such as Herve Leger and Preen for cost as low as $50. You can log on, choose from hundreds of dresses for various occasions by top designers, rent them for up to 8 days, and then ship them back for free! Rent the Runway also allows you to choose two different sizes for only $25 just in case one size doesn't fit.  They also carry fun jewelry that can help spice up your outfit. It is a members only website, but if you leave me a comment with your email address, I will be happy to send you an invitation! In the meantime, check out some of my favorite dresses for interview available on www.renttherunway.com.

Black Halo Jacket Belted Dress
rental: $50
A classic silhouette, perfect to show of your figure, with just enough interest at the neckline.

Proenza Schouler Peekaboo Shoulder Sheath
rental: $150
The cut out shoulders are just a simple yet sexy detail that adds on to this classic sheath dress.

Moschino Cheap & Chic Pretty Primadonna Dress
rental: $100
The color is beautiful, especially for darker skin tones, and the gathering helps add shape to the body.

Nicole Miller Steppin Out Dress
rental: $75
This is such a wonderful color and the neckline can help bring attention to a strong collar bone.

Herve Leger Lieutenant Bandage Dress
rental:$150
Herve Leger just hugs in all the right places, and again, if you have a great collar bone, this is a perfect neckline!

Herve Leger Sherbert Cap Sleeve Bandage Sheath
rental: $100
Love the color of this dress, and the shape is perfect too!

Preen Plaza Dress
rental: $150
I think one shoulders are great for Miss USA interviews, especially if tastefully done like this Preen dress.

Rebecca Taylor Daria Peplum Dress
rental: $50
This is a very Audrey Hepburn dress, very appropriate for a more conservative interview look.

Brian Reyes Urban Sophisticate Dress
rental:$100
Again, color can help you stand out. I love how this dress has a simple idea, but the color helps it pop!

Frank Tell Structured Skirt Dress
rental: $100
This dress is just super cute! I think it is very fitting for a Teen contestant, and would be great with a statement necklace.

And these are just a few of the options available! Again, leave me a comment with your email address so you can log on and see what a great tool this website is for interview attire!!

Mondo Mondo Mondo!

So the time has come to do another wrap up on my favorite: Project Runway. It is late coming since the finale was last week, but it is a must! Of course, I was rooting for Mondo to win the whole thing. He is from Denver, and was actually one of the first people to inspire me to try to model here in the Denver area. I was excited that the final two standing were Gretchen and Mondo, since they were my two favorite designers in terms of clothing throughout the whole entire show. I would have loved to see April in the final three over Andy South, but at least she was still able to show a collection at Fashion Week! Here are some of my favorite pieces from each designer that showed a collection at Fashion Week:

MONDO:
Loved loved loved everything about his collection, from the hair accessories to the makeup, it was just a Wow for me! I would seriously wear everything from it, but I just love these shorts and the blouse with them. I would buy them both in a heartbeat!

Gretchen:
I wasn't as excited about Gretchen's final collection. I agree with the judges that it is very what is in fashion now and there are definitely items that would sell very well, which is why this is my favorite outfit simply for the silhouette she created with the cropped top and pants. It is cute!

Andy South:
Well, I do like the shade of green he used throughout his collection. And I also liked the influence behind it. I could see myself with these shorts!

April:
I loved April's clothing throughout the show. Yes maybe it was too black all of the time, but black is such a great color and she had a new view on how to use it. I love this jumpsuit she created, especially the ombre effect. And I like the headband too!

Michael Costello:
He definitely proved to be the underdog. Everyone only ever had bad things to say about him, but I really love how he kept his head up the whole entire time. Now, I am not a fan of the sparkle pants, but I love the chocolate brown fringe top, and I can imagine it as a full length  evening gown. I think it would be epic!

Michael Drummond:
For some reason I love this dress. It seems very Alexander Wang to me. I think it would be great as a longer maxi dress, perfect for the Fall/Winter with some boots. I would totally wear it.

Valerie:
I love how she used basically every color in the rainbow for her collection. I am intrigued by this blue romper number. Not sure I would actually where it, but I can somehow picture it someone like Lady Gaga, or even Beyonce, and it looks good.

Christopher Collins:
I like the color and idea behind this piece. I think it would be a great outfit for something like the interview competition at Miss USA if it was just slightly more fitted through the bottom.

Casanova:
Definitely one of my favorite personalities on the show. I crack up when I think of his line, "I am making clothes for old ladys, sluts and flamenco dancers." I so wanted him to make it further along. He had great ideas in my opinion. Love this copper sparkly dress to pieces!

Ivy:
I love the simplicity of Ivy's clothes. Sometimes things just need to be basic, but beautiful, and I think Ivy does that perfectly. I could see her stuff selling against brands like Vince or James Perse. Its for the casual girl who still likes some uniqueness. This would be a perfect outfit for a trip to the beach.

I cannot wait for the next season of Project Runway!! I hope that more of my local designer friends can make it on the show. Or maybe I can just learn how to sew and make an appearance myself;)

Miss Colorado USA 2011

Today is the first day of competition for Miss Colorado USA 2011, and I can honestly say it is a miracle that I am even competing. I was going back and fourth about competing or not; there were a lot of factors against being able to. It wasn't until Thursday morning this week that I was actually an official contestant, talk about being so thankful that I am allowed to even be a part of the competition this year! I literally had to prepare everything last night. I hope that I will be able to give an update on how preliminaries go tonight, but I am not sure if I will have access to a computer! But yes, here I am! I could not not compete. It is a huge goal of mine to win and get a chance at the Miss USA crown! Hopefully I will be posting more later on tonight=)

Miss Universe 2010 Gowns

I know. Miss Universe is over, so this post is late, but I had to talk about the evening gowns from the pageant of course! So without anymore intro, here it goes:

Best Dressed- Miss Mexico aka Miss Universe 2010
The cut was fabulous. Color was stunning. The earrings and bracelet were divine. And then the matching red shoes equaled perfection. I think the gown sealed the deal for Miss Mexico!
I Didn't Think It Was That Bad- Miss Puerto Rico
Ok, yes, there was a huge puff ball on the back. I didn't hate it. I actually loved the color, the fit, and the huge bustle. It was a very Marilyn Monroe.
Best Bold Move- Miss Uruguay
I loved this color, the perfect shade of hot pink. And again, I don't hate the huge ruffles protruding from the front of the gown. The hair is perfection too! It was a bold look, and I think Miss Uruguay pulled it off.
Beautiful Floral- Miss Jamaica
I almost wish that Jamaica wore this dress for Finals. I usually do not warm up to floral prints, but somehow this one just works. I think the cut and fit have a lot to do with that. I love the colors too.
Bringing Sexy Back-TIE: Miss Albania & Miss Guatemala
Definitely the hottest women at the pageant, and the best part is neither of them were trying too hard to be hot. They just naturally are. I loved Albania's gown, and I think the shoes were the best part. So glad to see she passed on the stripper heels. And I loved the simplicity of Guatemala's gown. Simple, yet sexy.
So Fresh and So Clean- Miss Australia
I love Australia. She was my favorite contestant overall, and I was hoping she could win the whole thing! Her evening gown was just perfect for her. I love the cut and the embellishments. She looks like a doll.
Best Shimmer and Shine- Miss Philippines
Girlfriend worked this dress. I think this is a wonderful fabric and color for stage. It just popped and flowed so beautifully. And I love the updo as well.
Love the Bold Necklace- Miss Colombia
I have always wondered why you don't see more necklaces in pageants. The trend seems to be big chandelier earrings, so I appreciate Colombia and her chunky necklace. I think the color is a great contrast to the chocolate brown in the gown. Would have loved to see this dress on stage!
You is Fierce Award- Miss Georgia
This is such a Beyonce gown. I loved it! Maybe the shoulders could have been a little smaller, but I loved how Georgia looked so fashion forward. Her entire wardrobe really made her stand out as a fashionista.
Can I Have Your Whole Miss Universe Wardrobe?- Miss Japan
So every outfit Japan was pictured in I want in my own closet ASAP. I loved her evening gown, but I loved the accessories and shoes even more. I think Japan would be a perfect shopping buddy!

From Red Carpet to Miss USA stage

I love love love red carpet events, and the Emmy's last night were no exception. As a lover of both pageants and fashion, I always look forward to seeing the beautiful gowns and I always picture which gowns I would love to wear on a pageant stage. Here are a few dresses I think could translate well from the Red Carpet to the Miss USA Stage:

No. 1- Maria Menounos
My favorite of the night! I love this type of silhouette, low back, high front. I also love the beading details. For me, if this was maybe in a golden peachy color, it would be a perfect evening gown!
No. 2-  Claire Danes
Gorgeous dress! You gotta love bling, but sometimes it can be too overpowering! I think it works with this dress perfectly.
No. 3- Jennifer Carpenter
The bling dresses have it! I love the one shoulder, the fit, and the gun metal color. I would rock this dress!
No. 4- Nina Dobrev
The only thing I would change is the gathering of fabric over the slit, otherwise, this color and cut are absolutely beautiful!
No. 5- Brooke Burke
Simple and elegant, it is a dress that is all about the wearer. I would add some big crystal earrings!
No. 6- Giuliana Rancic
I love this whole look, including the hair. I wish we saw more high neck dresses in pageants too! This dress with a low back and maybe a slit in the front, and some nice drop earrings would be perfection to me!
No. 7- Kim Kardashian
I've always loved grecian style dresses, though they are a bit played out in the pageant world. But if you love something, then I say rock it anyways!
No. 8- Eva La Rue
Again, I love this whole look from the hair down to the jewelry. She looks elegant and refreshing, and I think it is a look that would translate perfectly to the stage.
Honorable Mention- Sophia Vergara
I love the color of the dress and I especially love the jewelry. I just don't love the line down the middle of the dress and the fit. I think if it was more fitted throughout the hips and then flared out around the knee, it would be amazing!
So there are just some of my thoughts of dresses I loved on last night's red carpet!
What were some of your favorite, and maybe not so favorite, Emmy Dresses?

Miss Colorado 2010

Hello everyone!

Well the pageant has passed, and no, I did not win the title of Miss Colorado 2010, but I can say this was one of the best experiences at a pageant I have ever had. I was actually unsure if I would be able to compete at all the week before the pageant. I was under a lot of stress with my mom who had been back in the hospital again. Then a few days after she was out I too had to be rushed to the hospital.  I awoke one morning with my heart racing and pounding out of my chest. I could not catch my breath and thought to myself that I was about to die. It was the scariest feeling I have ever had. I woke my mom up and she called 911 and I was rushed to the hospital. At first they thought I might have a blood clot in my lung, but test showed that I have an overactive thyroid. The few days after this episode, I found it difficult to work out or practice my talent without experiencing trouble breathing. I couldn’t even get through my whole dance. I became worried and unsure if I should try to compete, but that’s when I realized that I could not let the stress of what could happen take over anymore. I just had to go in knowing that I prepared my best, had the support of so many amazing people and that things always seem to happen for a reason, as I can note many times throughout my life so far.

I made it through the weekend, though I was not feeling my best. On Wednesday, we had rehearsals all day to learn the opening number dance. Thanks to our beautiful Miss Colorado 2009 Katie Layman, the choreography was amazing. It was a fun hip-hop routine to Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed Peas. Also on Wednesday we had rehearsals with our Princesses. This year, the Princesses got to do their own opening number routine. My princesses, Victoria and Piper, were so excited for it. They also got to escort us during the preliminary evening gown competition!

Thursday I competed in Onstage Question and Talent. I never really get nervous for onstage question. This year my question was if women could achieve the same success men can in the workplace. I cannot remember my exact answer, but it I agreed that we definitely can and gave examples of women who have. My talent was a jazz dance to Black and Gold by Sam Sparro, one of my favorite songs of all time! Being a part of this pageant really encouraged me to get back into dance. I’ve missed it so much, and returning back to taking dance classes has truly inspired me to continue and see how much progress I can make. Even the ballet instructor at my studio noted that I have a true talent for ballet, and that I need to get back into it! I was very proud of my talent this year. I pushed myself to try new things. I wish I had a clip of it to show, but I know that it went well!

Friday was when my sickness caught up to me. I was feeling very tired and then I got an upset stomach. There were at least 5 or 6 girls that had the same upset stomach too so there was a lot of Pepto going around! I had my interview that morning, and it was fun. The judges were very nice and easy going and always had new questions to ask. Many questions were focused on my platform, the Go Red For Women campaign, along with fashion related questions. I even got asked how I would dress Michelle Obama for an appearance! That night I did walk away with the preliminary swimsuit award and a $1000 scholarship for Academic Achievement. Thank you so much to Josh Rogers for supplying me with the workout plan that I dedicated myself to. I saw results so quickly and I know if I stick to it, I can have the six-pack abs I’ve always dreamed of!

Saturday was a better day. I think all the nerves were out and I could just relax. Before the show started, I was not nervous at all. I just had this overwhelming feeling of joy in my heart that I had made it through the week and that my hard work had paid off. I also made such good friends with the girls in my dressing room and I just felt accomplished!

The show started, and I was called into the top 15! First up was swimsuit; I was the third person to go. They had a fog machine that malfunctioned so the first 5 girls that went were fogged out! They allowed us to come back out and redo our walks, which was very nice! Then they called top 10, and I made it! I was the first girl out in evening gown, and I thought it went great. Then there was the top 5, and I didn’t make it. Of course there were some feelings of disappointment, but I was not angry or upset. I did cry a lot after the pageant though when I saw my brother standing in his Navy uniform. I know this will be his last time home for a long time, and I kept thinking how cool it would have been if he saw me win. But he was very proud of me regardless!

Big congratulations to the new Miss Colorado Melaina Shipwash. Three times is definitely a charm! She is a great example of sticking to your dreams. She has worked very hard and I know she will be a strong force at Miss America. So finally, thank you thank you thank you to everyone on this board and all of my sponsors. I was hoping I could bring a title to you guys, but I am so grateful for the support. It really did make a difference in the way I felt about competing this year. I have never had so much support before, and I think it just changes your whole attitude. I am so blessed to have the title of Miss Pageant Central. I just can’t put into words what a difference it made for me this time. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Project Runway

I absolutely adore Project Runway. I have been a follower since season 1, and if I could sew, I definitely would try out for it! I am even more excited for the next season of Project Runway because I know several designers who I have been able to work with closely here in Denver that are trying out! It is time Denver is put on the fashion map. Trust me, we are so much more than Crocs and REI sweaters!

But back to last night's season finale. As you know, the top three designers show their collections on the finale and the winner is chosen. What you might not know is that depending on where in the season the show is as it coincides with Fashion Week, all of the designers that are still in the competition show a collection so that the final three are not leaked. This season started later on TV, so when Fashion Week occurred, there were 11 contestants still on the show, so 10 designers showed collections (since Maya quit). I thought I would share my favorite pieces from the Project Runway designers:

Seth Aaron

I love Seth Aaron's tailoring skills. Every jacket he has made on the show I want to own. His final collection did not disappoint. I loved his use of patterns and colors. I always picture someone like Gwen Stefani or even Lady Gaga wearing his clothes around town.

Emilio Sosa

Emilio's collection reminded me of something you could walk into Macy's and buy right away. It was very wearable, and it definitely had some pieces I would purchase. I also loved the way he used color, especially has lining in the jackets.

Mila Hermanovski

I will admit I was not a huge Mila fan, and really wanted Jay to be in the final three. However, I found myself loving her final collection. I loved how she played with different shapes, silhouettes and textures. And I really want the black trench coat.

The other collections you did not see on TV:

Anthony Williams

Jay Nicolas Sario

Amy Sarabi

Jesse LeNoir

Ben Chmura

Jonathan Peters

Janeane Marie Ceccanti

It was a great season, and I think this was one of the strongest top 3 collections of all seasons. I will miss you Project Runway, and cannot wait until the next one. Here's to hoping that someone from Denver is finally chosen!
